The Photographic Season is the time to visit Cristalino to
see our resident pairs of Zigzag Heron when they are breeding.
Three nests of this enigmatic species have been discovered
in 2004
First recorded nest of the Rufous-Necked Puffbird
In July 2003, a Rufous-Necked Puffbird (Malacoptila
rufa)
was discovered at Cristalino,
only the second ever for this species. Bob Barnes and our local
and volunteer guides recorded the first photographic evidence
of the nest of this species, videotaping an adult bringing food
to the nest hole.
Reptiles and Amphibians of the Rio Cristalino In November 2005 the Rio Cristalino was visited by a team of herpetologists from the University of Oklahoma (USA) and the Universidade de Brasilia (Brasil) to survey the herpetofauna of Cristalino's Amazon-Cerrado contact zones. The researchers generated a list with photos of the herpetofauna of the Rio Cristalino, which includes several species new to science. Watch "Species & Trip Reports" for the Reptiles list
A new species of Forest-Falcon described! Andrew Whittaker described a new species of Falconidae, the Cryptic Forest-Falcon (Micrastur mintoni), from observations made from here at Cristalino.
